Strong start to Covid-19 and flu vaccine roll-out in North East and Yorkshire

The NHS Covid and flu vaccination programmes are off to a strong start in the North East and Yorkshire region, with more than 450,000 autumn Covid jabs and 850,000 flu vaccines delivered already.

This week a new flu booking system has been introduced, allowing millions of eligible adults to conveniently schedule their flu jab appointments at www.nhs.uk/book-a-flu-vaccination. Booking can also be done through the NHS App or by calling 119.

Many people are also taking advantage of the opportunity to receive both Covid-19 and flu vaccines during the same visit, thanks to the hard work of dedicated NHS staff in community pharmacies, GP practices and other vaccination settings.

Care home residents were among the first to have had their protection topped-up ahead of colder months when flu, Covid-19 and other viruses circulate more, with NHS teams visiting well over a third of all care homes already.

The NHS continues to send vaccination invitations to millions of eligible adults, including those with underlying health conditions and individuals aged 65 and over. Parents of 2-3-year-olds are also receiving texts and emails encouraging them to get their flu jab, along with a reminder to ensure MMR vaccinations are up to date.

The vaccination campaign is part of a comprehensive set of measures by the NHS to prepare for winter. These efforts are crucial as the health service faces challenges from ongoing industrial action, increased demand on emergency services, and the potential for new Covid-19 variants alongside common winter viruses.

Dr Yvette Oade CBE, Medical Director for NHS England in North East and Yorkshire, said:

“Local NHS teams have really pulled out all the stops to make such a strong start in delivering our vital winter vaccination programmes.

“Vaccines are our best defence against serious illnesses, and it’s crucial to top up your protection, even if you’ve previously been vaccinated or had the flu or Covid-19.”

The campaign encourages pregnant women to get vaccinated at any stage of pregnancy, and they are urged to consult their GP, midwife, or hospital team for any concerns or questions.

GP practices and other local NHS services have also been contacting people to offer both flu and Covid-19 vaccines, sometimes in the same visit. Where this is not possible, it is better to get each vaccine as soon as you can rather than waiting.
