Invest in your future health this Self Care Week, urges NHS in North East and Yorkshire

The NHS in the North East and Yorkshire is encouraging everyone to invest in their future self this Self Care Week (13 – 19 November) by making small changes that can make a big difference.

The theme for 2023 is “Mind & Body” and is an opportunity for people to make improvements to their life to protect their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Dr Jonathan Slade, GP and a Medical Director for NHS England in the region, said:

Dr Slade“We all know that it makes sense to look after our own health as best we can, especially given that nearly half of all illnesses can be prevented.

“Self Care Week is an opportunity to recognise the benefits that simple activities like getting out for a walk, taking an exercise class or gardening for example can bring in maintaining our wellbeing and keeping us active.

“It’s also important that we take care of ourselves by making sure we get enough sleep, eat a healthy and balanced diet as well as making sure we seek medical advice when it’s needed. Community pharmacists can be key in preventing illness and where possible we should utilise their wealth of knowledge to treat minor ailments.”

Self Care Week is also about safely managing long term conditions and, understanding how to self-treat those common disturbances to normal good health, such as coughs, colds, sore throats etc. and taking advice from the pharmacist if you’re unsure of symptoms. They can also help with lifestyle advice.

Additionally, it is a reminder for people to continue to accept any recommended vaccinations they have been offered, such as the current flu vaccination if they are eligible, as well as attending screening appointments.

Dr Abbie Brooks, GP partner at Priory Medical Group in York, said:

“It’s never too early or too late to begin to make small, simple changes that will enhance and protect your health now and, in the future, and often, one small change will make a big difference to your wellbeing.

“For instance, choosing to become more active will not only improve your physical health, it will also boost your mood, particularly if you choose to exercise outdoors in the fresh air.”

Some other top tips include:

  • Get active – regular exercise supports general wellbeing and helps maximise your immunity.
  • Sleep well – a good’s night’s sleep is as essential to our health and wellbeing as eating healthily and exercising so, make sure you get the recommended 7-8 hours a night!
  • Good nutrition – healthy eating is crucial to our health so we can start by swapping unhealthy snacks for healthy options such as nuts, seeds and fruit. Ask your pharmacist for advice on managing your weight.
  • Supporting your mental wellness by keeping connected with others and taking time to stop and switch off.
  • Taking vitamin D supplements.
