NHS South East praises year-long monumental efforts as it tops 16 million jabs in arms and plans for more Covid-19 top-ups

The NHS in the South East is praising the monumental efforts of staff and volunteers across the region as it marks the anniversary of the first Covid-19 vaccination and the start of the biggest immunisation programme in history.

More than 16 million doses of the vital Covid-19 jab, including 1st, 2nd and booster and 3rd doses, have now been administered in the South East since this time last year – the second highest performing region in England.

Vaccinations have been delivered through a combination of large-scale vaccination centres, hospital hubs, GP surgeries and community pharmacies.

Caroline Reid, Regional Director of Commissioning and Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for the Covid-19 Vaccination programme for NHS England, South East, said:

“I am truly humbled by the efforts of everyone who has contributed to the Covid-19 vaccination roll out in South East region.

“Thanks to everyone’s unfailing support, dedication, care, compassion and hard work – we have sprinted like Usain Bolt, run several marathons and delivered the largest vaccination programme in the NHS’s history.

“It is important, as we embark on another sprint to deliver booster jabs by the end of January 2022 that no one is left behind and every community and individual are offered the life-saving covid vaccinations.

She added:” As we reflect on the past twelve months, we of course  remember those who have sadly lost their lives to Covid, their families and friends.”

People are urged to continue to support the vaccination programme, to take up the offer of having their first or second vaccinations if they have been invited but have not yet done so and, if eligible, book up for their booster jab.

Dr Vaughan Lewis, Regional Medical Director, said: “As we fast approach Christmas, a hugely important time for so many of us, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the festivities safely. One of the best ways to do this is by joining the millions already vaccinated across the South East.

“Whether you’re due your booster or second dose, or indeed you’re yet to have your first dose, additional vaccination capacity has been put in place so head down to a site that is convenient for you.

He added: “Having your vaccines will give you the maximum protection ahead of Christmas to protect you, your family and all those around you.”

Currently, you can pre-book your COVID-19 booster online if it’s been five months (152 days) since you had your second dose and you are:

  • aged 40 and over
  • aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts you at increased risk from COVID-19.
  • Frontline health and social care workers

Although you can pre-book a booster dose from 5 months after your 2nd dose, the appointment dates you’ll be offered will be from 6 months (182 days) after your 2nd dose.

The National Booking Service (NBS) is currently being updated to reflect the three-month (91 days) interval from the second dose to booster vaccination. The intention is to go live as soon as possible.

Families of healthy 12 to 15 year olds who have not yet had a first dose of the vaccine are also encouraged to book through the National Booking Service online or via 119.
