Finalists for NHS Parliamentary Awards announced ahead of 75th birthday

The NHS in the South East has today (12 June) announced its finalists for this year’s NHS Parliamentary Awards, ahead of its milestone 75th birthday.

The finalists, who are now through to the national judging stage, have been chosen across ten categories.

Anne Eden, Regional Director of NHS England in the South East region, said:

“I feel incredibly proud to see our dedicated staff and volunteers being recognised in this way and I would like to personally congratulate each and every one of them.

“I would also like to thank local MPs from across the region for taking the time to submit their nominations, and to our regional judging team who have had the challenging job of selecting winners from the dozens of fantastic nominations received this year.

“There really is a lot of incredible work going on across the South East which undoubtedly makes a difference to the patients and communities we serve.”

The 2023 regional finalists, selected by NHS leaders in the South East, are:

  • The Excellence in Urgent and Emergency Care Award: Reducing Avoidable Cardiac Arrest Calls, A ‘Patient First’ Frontline Led Collaborative Journey, Medway NHS Foundation Trust, nominated by MP Rehman Chishti
  • The Excellence in Mental Health Care Award: Talking Wellness: Kent and Medway’s Staff Mental Health Wellbeing Service, nominated by MP Helen Whately
  • The Future NHS Award: My Medial Record team, University Hospital Southampton Digital, nominated by MP Alan Whitehead
  • The Excellence in Healthcare Award: Prostate Self-Referral Team, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, nominated by MP Royston Smith
  • The Excellence in Primary Care and Community Care Award: Frailty Urgent Care Response and Virtual Ward Service, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, nominated by MPs Leo Docherty, Ranil Jayawardena and James Sunderland
  • The Health Equalities Award: One Recovery Bucks (Adult Substance Misuse Service), Inclusion specialist service of Midland Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, nominated by MP Rob Butler
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Award: A Midwife at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, nominated by MPs Caroline Dinenage, Penny Mordaunt and Stephen Morgan
  • The NHS Rising Star Award: A Fundraising Officer at Oxford Hospitals Charity, nominated by MP Robert Courts
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award: A Diabetic Retinopathy Nurse Specialist/Lead Intavitreal Nurse Injector at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, nominated by MPs Caroline Dinenage and Stephen Morgan
  • The Volunteer Award: Pets As Therapy Team, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, nominated by MPs Caroline Dinenage and Penny Mordaunt

This year, the regional judging panel has also selected runners-up against each of the ten categories and would like to thank them for their contributions. Please note that runners-ups will not form part of the national judging process.

The 2023 regional runners-up, selected by NHS leaders in the South East, are:

  • The Excellence in Urgent and Emergency Care Award. NHS Southern Health Foundation Trust Urgent Community Response Team Mid & North Hampshire, nominated by MP Maria Miller
  • The Excellence in Mental Health Care Award. NHS Southern Gambling Service, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Southampton, nominated by MP Alan Whitehead
  • The Future NHS Award. Pathology Team, William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent, nominated by MP Damien Green
  • The Excellence in Healthcare Award. Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust’s Urology Team, nominated by MP Angela Richardson
  • The Excellence in Primary Care and Community Care Award. AccuRx initiative to increase collaborative working and identification of undiagnosed hypertension, Community Pharmacy Surrey and Sussex, nominated by MPs Maria Caulfield, Nick Gibb, Tim Loughton, Huw Merriman and Lloyd Russell-Moyle
  • The Health Equalities Award. Alliance For Better Care, Surrey, nominated by MP Claire Coutinho
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Award. A Sister in Critical Care, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, nominated by MP Bob Seely
  • The NHS Rising Star Award. A GP/Director, Manage Your Mind, Kent, nominated by MPs Rehman Chishti and Kelly Tolhurst
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award. N/A
  • The Volunteer Award. A Volunteer at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, nominated by MP James Sunderland

An award ceremony for all finalists and winners will take place in London on the actual 75th birthday of the NHS (5 July).
