VTE Risk Assessment data collection – 2012-13 Quarter 4

The eleventh set of quarterly statistics on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment in England, produced by NHS England, was released on 7th June 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of VTE Risk Assessments carried out on adult admissions to NHS funded acute care are as follows:

  • Of the 3.4 million adult patients admitted to NHS funded acute care between January and March 2013, as reported in this data collection, 94.3% of these received a VTE risk assessment on admission, similar to 94.2% in Q3 2012-13.
  • In Q4 2012-13, the proportion of admissions receiving a VTE risk assessment was slightly lower for NHS acute providers (94.2%) than Independent Sector providers (98.5%), with NHS acute providers carrying out around 97% of all VTE risk assessments.
  • At SHA level, performance varied from 93.1% in North East and East Midlands to 97.2% in East of England during Quarter 4. All the SHAs achieved the 90% compliance for this quarter.
  • In Q4 2012-13, 306 providers (out of 318 providers who submitted data) reported that at least 90% of adult admissions were risk assessed for VTE, compared to 301 in Q3 2012-13, 293 in Q2 2012-13, 275 in Q1 2012-13, and 18 in July 2010.
