NHS inpatient elective admission events and outpatient referrals and attendances, quarter ending 30th June 2014

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30 June 2014 include data for England, Area Teams and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The latest quarterly statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by NHS England were released on 29 August according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days, for example April to June 2014 had 61 days but April to June 2013 had 62 days. Data are adjusted for this where appropriate, to allow comparison on a like-for-like basis.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q1 2013/14 to Q1 2014/15 the number of decisions to admit increased by 27,743 (3.6%) to 1.5 million. The number of elective admissions from the list increased by 22,134 (3.4%) to 1.3 million.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q1 2013/14 to Q1 2014/15 the number of GP referrals made increased by 147,475 (6.5%) to 3.2 million and the number of other referrals made increased by 17,059 (2.6%) to 1.9 million.

From Q1 2013/14 to Q1 2014/15 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics increased by 189,596 (6.1%) to 4.4 million and total attendances increased by 352,349 (4.2%) to 14.1 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatients appointment for Q1 2014/15 was 8.6% compared to 8.3% for Q1 2013/14.
