Practice Nurses shine bright at Angels of the North Awards Ceremony

Practice nurses from the across North Cumbria and the North East gathered at the Ramside Hotel in Durham last night for a regional awards ceremony to recognise their achievements.

The general practice nursing ‘Angels of the North’ conference and awards are organised by NHS England and NHS Improvement to recognise the skills, expertise and dedication of practice nurses across the area, and is now in its second year.

Ruth May, Chief Nurse for NHS England and NHS Improvement opened this year’s event with a special video message, accompanied by some inspirational speakers from across the nursing sector, who all helped raise the profile of general practice nursing; highlighting the important work all the general practice nursing teams across the region do, day in and day out.

Practice nurses typically work in GP surgeries and play an essential role in delivering care through general practice. Working alongside doctors, health visitors, pharmacists and dietitians, practice nurses plan and provide nursing care, treatment and health education to patients of all ages.

General practice staff were asked to nominate practice nurses in a number of different categories, including unsung hero, outstanding leadership, embracing education and rising star and General Practice “Angel of the North” Nurse of 2020.

Emma Nunez, Director of Nursing in North Cumbria and the North east at NHS England and Improvement said: “This year the awards are even more special as we celebrate The Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020. We are thrilled so many people have come forward to nominate practice nurses for these awards. It shows what huge talent lies within the NHS in North Cumbria and the North East.

“By celebrating the achievements of these individuals, we can shine a light on just some of the fabulous people involved in practice nursing in the NHS.”
