South East steps up: Nearly 300,000 flu jab appointments available next week
The NHS in the South East is urging people to get their flu jab now, as health leaders warn there are only weeks left before the worst of the flu season typically strikes.
Eligible individuals are being encouraged to come forward for vaccination to ensure they’re protected ahead of the seasonal flu peak. This year, flu cases are already surging more than a month earlier than usual, with rates three times higher than the same time last year.
It follows the biggest flu season in Australia’s history – often an accurate predictor of what is around the corner for people in England.
To make it as easy as possible for south east residents to get protected, over 293,000 vaccination appointments have been made available next week across the region in GP surgeries, pharmacies and community clinics with people being urged to come forward and get protected.
Caroline Reid, NHS South East’s Director of Commissioning, said: “Flu season tends to peak in early December – and that’s just over three weeks away. Since the vaccine takes up to two weeks to build strong protection, it’s really important that those most at risk get their jab as soon as possible.
She added: “NHS teams across the region are working incredibly hard to make it easier and more convenient for people to get their vaccinations, so I’d encourage everyone eligible to come forward and book an appointment heading into winter.”
Latest data shows NHS teams have delivered over 2.29 million* flu vaccines across the South East since the rollout began.
The vaccines are available for everyone aged 65 and over, under 65s in clinical risk groups, pregnant women, care home residents and carers, close contacts of those who are immunosuppressed, frontline social care workers, and health and social care staff as well as children.
Parents are reminded to return school vaccination consent forms or book appointments for children aged 2 to 3 to ensure protection ahead of the Christmas holidays.
COVID-19 vaccinations are also available for: Adults aged 75 and over; older adult care home residents; and people who are immunosuppressed.
Latest data shows just over 739,000** people have received their COVID-19 jab since early October in the South East. Over 75s and those that are immunosuppressed can book their COVID-19 vaccine directly with their local pharmacy, GP practice, via the NHS app, online at www.nhs.uk/bookcovid or via 119.
During winter, respiratory infections rise and can severely impact those with long-term conditions like COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. While many minor illnesses can be managed at home, it’s important to seek help early if symptoms worsen.
Winter vaccinations are a key part of managing long-term conditions. The NHS also recommends RSV vaccine for pregnant women and older adults and pneumococcal vaccine for over 65s.
