Treating tobacco dependency
In the South West we are united in making the region Smoke-Free by 2030, targeting adult tobacco dependence prevalence of 5% or lower.
Achieving a smoke-free South West is our greatest opportunity to reduce health inequalities and build a region free from the devastating effects of tobacco dependency, enabling our residents to enjoy longer, healthier lives.
Smoking cessation and tobacco control is a significant focus of the NHS 10-Year Health Plan.
The South West’s Tobacco Control and Smoking Cessation Framework and Action Plan (2025-2030) has been launched to harness the power and influence of all NHS and local government organisations in the South West. It presents a unified regional commitment to accelerate progress and sets out a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to reduce tobacco-related harm, save lives, and improve wellbeing across communities.
Our progress to date has been remarkable. Regional tobacco dependence rates have fallen to 11.2% – a historic low – with 250,000 fewer smokers than a decade ago and more than 220,000 people accessing cessation services
However, with more than 500,000 people still smoking and 6,500-plus preventable deaths annually, significant challenges remain. By working together more closely than ever before we, our vision will become a reality.
