NHS inpatient elective admission events and outpatient referrals and attendances, quarter ending 30th June 2013

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30th June 2013 include data for England, Area Teams and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The latest quarterly statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by NHS England were released on 3oth August 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days in that quarter so figures below have been adjusted for this where appropriate.  April to June 2012 had 60 working days and April to June 2013 had 62 working days.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q1 2012/13 to Q1 2013/14 the number of decisions to admit has increased by 40,378 (2.9% or -0.4% adjusted for working days) remaining at 1.4 million, similarly the number of elective admissions from the list has increased by 58,363 (4.6% or 1.3% adjusted for working days) remaining at 1.3 million.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q1 2012/13 to Q1 2013/14 the number of GP referrals made has increased by 147,923 (5.0% or 1.6% adjusted for working days) to 3.1 million and the number of other referrals made has increased by 33,227 (1.8% or -1.5% adjusted for working days) to 1.9 million.

From Q1 2012/13 to Q1 2013/14 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics have increased by 110,776 (2.6% or -0.7% adjusted for working days) to 4.3 million and total attendances increased by 596,813 (4.5% or 1.2% adjusted for working days) to 13.8 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatients appointment for Q1 2013/14 was 8.3% which is the same as for Q1 2012/13.
