Dementia Assessment and Referral data collection 2013/14 Quarter 1 (April 2013 to June 2013)

This is the first publication of the Dementia Assessment and Referral data collection in England by NHS England for the period covering Quarter 1 (April-June) in 2013/14 in England. It was released on 4th September 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Key Points

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of patients aged 75 and over admitted as an emergency for more than 72 hours who have been identified as potentially having dementia, who are appropriately assessed and, where appropriate, were referred on to specialist services are as follows:

  •  71% of admitted patients were initially assessed for potential dementia in Quarter 1 2013/14.
  • Of the patients initially assessed and found as potentially having dementia, 86% were further assessed in Quarter 1 2013/14.
  • Of the patients who were further assessed and were diagnosed as potentially having dementia, 87% were referred on to specialist services in Quarter 1 2013/14.
  •  In Quarter 1 2013/14, 56% of the trusts carried out initial assessments for cases of dementia, 69% carried out further diagnoses and 75% referred cases on to specialist services in 90% or over of their emergency admissions.
