NHS cancelled elective operations, quarter ending 30 September 2013

The latest quarterly national statistics on NHS cancelled elective operations produced by NHS England were released on 8th November 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

NHS cancelled elective operations figures for the quarter ending 30th September 2013 include data for England, Area Teams and NHS Trusts.

The figures shown are the number of last minute cancelled elective operations for non clinical reasons and, of those, the number subsequently re-admitted within 28 days.

The key points from the latest release are:

During the quarter ending 30 September 2013, 14,972 operations were cancelled at the last minute for non-clinical reasons by NHS providers. In the same period in 2012/13, there were 13,155 cancelled operations.

Cancelled operations during the quarter represented 0.8% of all elective activity compared to 0.7% for the corresponding period in 2012/13.

Of these cancellations 584 (3.9%) of patients were not treated within 28 days of a cancellation.  In the same period in 2012/13, 582 (4.4%) of patients were not treated within 28 days.

In line with our revisions policy, we were due to publish revisions to previously published data however there were no approved revision requests and therefore no changes have been made.
