NHS inpatient elective admission events and outpatient referrals and attendances, quarter ending 30th September 2013

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30th September 2013 include data for England, Area Teams and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The latest quarterly statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by NHS England were released on 29th November 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days in that quarter so figures below have been adjusted for this where appropriate.  July to September 2012 had 64 working days and July to September 2013 had 65 working days.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q2 2012/13 to Q2 2013/14 the number of decisions to admit has increased by 36,219 (2.5% or 1.0% adjusted for working days) to 1.5 million, similarly the number of elective admissions from the list has increased by 42,461 (3.3% or 1.7% adjusted for working days) remaining at 1.3 million.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q2 2012/13 to Q2 2013/14 the number of GP referrals made has increased by 162,203 (5.5% or 3.9% adjusted for working days) remaining at 3.1 million and the number of other referrals made has increased by 28,747 (1.6% or 0.0% adjusted for working days) remaining at 1.9 million.

From Q2 2012/13 to Q2 2013/14 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics have increased by 70,996 (1.7% or 0.1% adjusted for working days) to 4.4 million and total attendances increased by 460,416 (3.4% or 1.9% adjusted for working days) to 13.8 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatients appointment for Q2 2013/14 was 8.7% which compares to 8.6% for Q2 2012/13.

The Whittington Hospital NHS Trust did not submit data for this quarter.
