Dementia Assessment and Referral data collection 2013/14 Quarter 2 (July 2013 to September 2013)

This is the publication of the Dementia Assessment and Referral data collection in England by NHS England for the period covering Quarter 2 (July-September) in 2013/14 in England. It was released on 4th December 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Key Points

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of patients aged 75 and over admitted as an emergency for more than 72 hours who have been identified as potentially having dementia, who are appropriately assessed and, where appropriate, were referred on to specialist services are as follows:

  • 67 trusts achieved 90% in all three measures, an increase from 59 trusts in Q1 2013/14.
  • 79% of admitted patients were initially assessed for potential dementia in Q2 2013/14, an increase of 8 percentage points from 71% in Q1 2013/14.
  • 89% of admitted patients potentially having dementia were appropriately assessed in Q2 2013/14, an increase of 3 percentage points from 86% in Q1 2013-14.
  • 91% of appropriately assessed patients were referred on to specialist services in Q2 2013/14, an increase of 4 percentage points from 87% in Q1 2013/14.
  • The percentages of trusts in Q2 2013/14 achieving 90% or over of their emergency admissions for each measure was: 57% of the trusts carried out initial assessments for cases of dementia, an increase from 56% in Q1 2013/14; 65% carried out further diagnoses, a decrease from 69% in Q1 2013/14; 68% referred cases on to specialist services, a decrease from 75% in Q1 2013/14.
  • The number of data returns submitted by NHS providers of acute funded care has increased slightly to 144 in Q2 2013/14 from 142 in Q1 2013/14.
