The latest quarterly NHS cancelled elective operations statistics produced by NHS England were released on 13th November 2015.

NHS cancelled elective operations figures for the quarter ending 30th September 2015 include data for England, Regions and NHS Trusts.

The figures shown are the number of last-minute cancelled elective operations for non-clinical reasons and, of those, the number subsequently re-admitted within 28 days.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • During the quarter ending 30th September 2015, 16,397 operations were cancelled at the last minute for non-clinical reasons by NHS providers. In the same period in 2014/15, there were 15,898 cancelled operations.
  • Cancelled operations during the quarter represented 0.8% of all elective activity, which is equal to the corresponding percentage in the same period in 2014/15.
  • Of these cancellations 971 (5.9%) of patients were not treated within 28 days of a cancellation. In the same period in 2014/15, 691 (4.3%) of patients were not treated within 28 days.

We have published revisions to the quarter ending 30th June 2015.
