NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events, quarter ended 31 December 2015

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 31 December 2015 include data for England, Regions and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days, and data are adjusted for this where appropriate, to allow comparison on a like-for-like basis. September to December 2014 and September to December 2015 both had 64 working days. This means that we have not needed to make adjustments for working days in the figures below.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q3 2014/15 to Q3 2015/16 the number of decisions to admit increased by 46,383 (3.0%) to 1.6 million. The number of elective admissions from the list increased by 46,484 (3.3%) to 1.4 million.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q3 2014/15 to Q3 2015/16 the number of GP referrals made increased by 192,568 (6.1%) to 3.4 million and the number of other referrals made increased by 157,704 (8.5%) to 2.0 million.

From Q3 2014/15 to Q3 2015/16 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics increased by 218,880 (4.8%) to 4.8 million and total attendances increased by 557,526 (3.9%) to 14.9 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatient appointments was 8.8% for both Q3 2014/15 and Q3 2015/16.
