NHS cancelled elective operations, quarter ending 31 March 2016

The latest quarterly NHS cancelled elective operations statistics produced by NHS England were released on 13th May 2016.

NHS cancelled elective operations figures for the quarter ending 31st  March 2016 include data for England, Regions and NHS Trusts.

The figures shown are the number of last-minute cancelled elective operations for non-clinical reasons and, of those, the number subsequently re-admitted within 28 days.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • During the quarter ending 31st March 2016, 23,180 operations were cancelled at the last minute for non-clinical reasons by NHS providers. In the same period in 2014/15, there were 20,464 cancelled operations.
  • Cancelled operations during the quarter represented 1.2% of all elective activity, which is an increase to the corresponding percentage in the same period in 2014/15.
  • Of these cancellations 1,849 (8.0%) of patients were not treated within 28 days of a cancellation. In the same period in 2014/15, 1,787 (8.7%) of patients were not treated within 28 days.
