NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events, quarter ended 31 March 2016

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 31 March 2016 include data for England, Regions and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days, for example January to March 2015 had 63 working days but January to March 2016 had 62 working days. Data are adjusted for this where appropriate, to allow comparison on a like-for-like basis.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q4 2014/15 to Q4 2015/16 the number of decisions to admit increased by 16,751 (2.7%) to 1.6 million. The number of elective admissions from the list increased by 14,169 (2.6%) to 1.4 million.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q4 2014/15 to Q4 2015/16 the number of GP referrals made increased by 191,841 (7.5%) to 3.5 million and the number of other referrals made increased by 152,851 (9.9%) to 2.0 million.

From Q4 2014/15 to Q4 2015/16 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics increased by 191,945 (5.9%) to 4.7 million and total attendances increased by 408,549 (4.5%) to 14.9 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatient appointments was 8.4% for Q4 2014/15 and 8.5% for Q4 2015/16.
