NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events, quarter ended 30 June 2016

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30 June 2016 include data for England, Regions and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days, for example April to June 2015 had 61 working days but April to June 2016 had 63 working days. Data are adjusted for this where appropriate, to allow comparison on a like-for-like basis.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q1 2015/16 to Q1 2016/17 the number of decisions to admit increased by 66,004 (1.0%) to 1.6 million. The number of elective admissions increased by 44,046 to 1.4 million. Adjusted for working days the percentage change for number of elective admissions since Q1 2015/16 has fallen slightly (-0.2%).

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q1 2015/16 to Q1 2016/17 the number of GP referrals made increased by 264,054 (4.4%) to 3.6 million and the number of other referrals made increased by 97,688 (1.6%) to 2.0 million.

From Q1 2015/16 to Q1 2016/17 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics increased by 294,462 (3.0%) to 4.9 million and total attendances increased by 758,353 (1.9%) to 15.2 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatient appointments was 8.5% for Q1 2015/16 and 8.6% for Q1 2016/17.
