Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Non-executive Director
Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of mental health and community health services to a population of 900,000 people across Berkshire. It operates from approximately 100 sites across the county, including 323 inpatient beds across 16 wards over eight locations. Much of its healthcare and therapy services are provided to people within their own homes.
The Trust employs over 5,000 staff which includes medics, registered nurses, therapists, psychologists, and both clinical and non-clinical support staff. The commitment of its staff and the way it respects and supports staff is the principal factor in excellence.
A Non-executive Director is a member of the Trust Board and brings independence, external skills and perspectives, and challenge to strategy development. Directors share a corporate responsibility for the governance and performance of the Trust in meeting both strategic and operational objectives.
The Non-executive Directors are accountable to the Chair of the Trust, who also chairs the Council of Governors. The Council of Governors of an NHS Foundation Trust has specific responsibility for the appointment, remuneration and removal of the Non-Executive Directors.
Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Non-executive Director who brings senior executive background in large or complex organisations with in-depth experience of using digital technologies to transform service, improve quality and enhance efficiency.
As the most digitally-enabled NHS trust in the country – having topped the NHS Digital Maturity Assessment – Berkshire Healthcare has built a strong digital foundation. The next stage is scaling that platform: empowering patients to manage their own health digitally, expanding AI and emerging technology adoption, and building the right partnerships with tech companies and private providers. This new Non-Executive Director will be able to advise the Board as it oversees this next chapter.
Overall, the successful candidate will bring broad business skills, experience of leading digitally-enabled service transformation and a clear understanding of governance and risk. They will need to be able to think strategically and have the ability to challenge, influence and build consensus on a wide range of issues. It is expected that they will understand the complexities of working in a multi-site operation, think beyond organisational boundaries, bring high levels of personal and business integrity and be able to ensure exemplary standards of quality, probity and governance.
Closing date for receipt of applications: Midnight (UK time) on the evening of 14th May
