Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Non-executive Directors x2

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is seeking two outstanding Non-Executive Directors to join its unitary Board at an important point in the development of the NHS and the Trust.

We are looking for an experienced Primary Care Leader and a rounded Digital, Data and AI Leader. Both appointees will contribute across the full Board agenda, providing independent oversight, constructive challenge and strategic advice while bringing additional insight in their specialist field.

WWL is one of the largest acute and community NHS providers in the North West. We serve around 330,000 people across Wigan Borough and provide specialist services to patients from across the region and beyond. Our Strategy 2030 is focused on Patients, People, Performance and Partnerships, supported by our ambition to Improve, Integrate and Innovate.

We particularly welcome candidates who share our values, bring sound judgement, strategic thinking and curiosity, and can work collaboratively with colleagues across the Board and the wider health and care system.

The two opportunities

Role 1 – Primary Care Leader

We are seeking an experienced GP or senior primary care clinician with a strong track record of leading transformation across primary and community care settings.

You will bring a deep understanding of the strategic direction of the NHS, including prevention, population health management, neighbourhood health services and integrated models of care. Your insight will help the Board oversee delivery of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan and wider system reform, including the shift towards providing more care closer to home.

You will ideally bring:

  • a clinical background as a GP, or substantial senior clinical leadership experience in primary care
  • credibility across general practice and knowledge of Primary Care Networks, neighbourhood working and system reform
  • experience of leading transformation across organisational boundaries
  • a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved in integrated, community-based care

Role 2 – Digital, Data and AI Leader

We are seeking a rounded Board-level leader with significant experience of digital transformation, data and information management, artificial intelligence and technology-enabled service improvement.

You will provide independent challenge and support to ensure digital investment and innovation deliver measurable benefits for patients, staff and the organisation. Your expertise may have been gained outside healthcare, but you must appreciate NHS governance, organisational complexity and the realities of transformation in resource-constrained environments.

You will bring:

  • extensive experience of digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data, analytics or information management
  • the ability to apply specialist knowledge through governance, challenge and assurance rather than operational control
  • understanding of data quality, performance intelligence, information governance, interoperability, technology risk and benefits realisation
  • insight into both the opportunities and risks presented by artificial intelligence
