Bolton NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive range of health and wellbeing services to people across Bolton, Greater Manchester and the surrounding area. Care is delivered through the Royal Bolton Hospital, a network of community sites and clinics, and directly in people’s homes. With over 6,000 staff operating across 25 locations, the Trust is one of the busiest and most dynamic providers in the North West, serving a population of around 280,000.

Non-executive Directors at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust play a pivotal role in ensuring the organisation delivers safe, effective and compassionate care while maintaining the highest standards of governance and accountability. Working alongside Executive Directors as equal members of the Board, they share collective responsibility for the Trust’s strategic direction and performance.

To be eligible, candidates must meet the requirements of the Fit and Proper Persons Test (Health and Social Care Act 2008) and not be employed by the Trust. As a proud membership organisation, the Trust automatically enrols all Non-Executive Directors as members; membership is free and open to all ages.

Role 1 – Finance

Experience and Background

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Non-executive Director with a finance background to join its Board. They will bring recent, relevant senior-level financial experience, sound judgement and independence of thought, and a strong track record of strategic leadership within a large, complex organisation.

The successful candidate will bring senior leadership experience, independence of thought and the ability to operate effectively as part of a high-performing unitary Board. They will demonstrate personal integrity, sound judgement and a commitment to the principles and values of the NHS.

  • Recent and relevant financial experience supported by a recognised financial qualification or substantial senior-level financial management experience
  • A track record of leadership at board or senior executive level in the NHS.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in stakeholder-rich environments, demonstrating empathy, influence and collaboration
  • Understanding of good governance and accountability frameworks, ideally gained in a regulated or high-stakes context
  • Evidence of exercising independent judgement and contributing to strategic debate
  • As a Non-executive Director with a Finance background, the successful candidate will bring independent financial expertise and constructive challenge to board discussion, supporting effective oversight of financial strategy, planning, performance, sustainability and governance
  • The successful candidate will use their finance experience to support scrutiny of financial reports, business cases, investment decisions and major transformation programmes

Role 2 – Digital

Experience and Background

The successful candidate will bring significant experience of leading complex organisational transformation within healthcare or another large, regulated environment. They will combine strategic insight with sound judgement and possess the credibility to contribute effectively at Board level.

Applications are welcomed from leaders across healthcare, industry and other complex regulated sectors who have successfully led large-scale organisational transformation. Candidates may have developed this experience through digital transformation, operational improvement, commercial transformation or service redesign.

They will demonstrate personal integrity, sound judgement and a commitment to the principles and values of the NHS.

  • Recent senior-level experience in digital, data, technology or transformation. Candidates should have evidence of leading or advising on digital strategy, innovation, cyber security, data-driven improvement or technology-enabled service change
  • Experience of operating successfully at board or executive level, contributing to organisational strategy, governance and performance
  • Experience of using digital and data to support improved outcomes, service redesign, operational efficiency, productivity, user experience or population health
  • An understanding of the opportunities and risks associated with digital transformation including information governance and cyber resilience
  • Fresh ideas and perspectives from outside the NHS are particularly welcome
  • Evidence of exercising independent judgement and contributing to strategic debate
  • A high level of accountability gained through experience of holding senior management teams to account
