Text messaging

Text messaging can be used to supplement national and local screening invitation letters, or to follow up with non-attenders.

One study of interventions found that for women who continuously had not responded to invitations for cervical screening, text message invitations with an explainer video about the cervical screening process and benefits linked was effective at engaging these patients. Using text messages with a clear call to action resulted in a significant increase in young people undergoing a screening test.

Using text messages may overcome the barriers to reaching those who share characteristics with the portraits of Samira, Molly, Ellie, Victoria, or Nina.

Planning and implementing text messaging

Plan
Assess readiness Assess whether any existing text messaging services can be easily adapted to include cervical screening.
Define messaging strategy Establish protocols for determining the content and frequency of text messages to be sent for cervical screening reminders, while also ensuring compliance with privacy regulations by establishing procedures for patient consent and opt-out processes.
Develop message content Develop concise and informative message content for cervical screening reminders. Clearly state the reason for contact and provide a clear call to action. Messages should emphasise the importance of screening, prompt recipients to schedule an appointment, and provide simple steps for booking or contacting the surgery for further assistance.

Consider sharing the NHS England video on how cervical screening is performed.

Staff training and support Offer training to clinic staff, if necessary, on using the text messaging platform and effectively managing patient communication. Ensure staff are equipped to handle patient enquiries or concerns regarding text messaging for cervical screening reminders.
Promote
Website Update the surgery’s website highlighting that eligible patients may receive a text message, and the need for people to book their cervical screening.
Social media Use social media to post updates about the text messages, include information about why the surgery is sending these messages, and that people can call the surgery to book an appointment (or book online if an option).
Communicate with patients Inform patients about the upcoming implementation of text messaging for cervical screening reminders through various channels, including in-surgery promotional material, newsletters, and social media.
Execute
Implement text messaging system

Integrate the selected text messaging platform into the surgery’s communication systems and workflows and conduct thorough testing to ensure messages are delivered accurately and on time.
Provide ongoing support

Provide ongoing support to surgery staff and patients to resolve any technical issues or concerns related to text messaging for cervical screening reminders. Monitor patient engagement with text messaging reminders and adapt the messaging strategy as necessary to maximise effectiveness.
Evaluate
Effectiveness of reminders Monitor and track:

·the number of patients who respond to text messages and schedule screening appointments as a result

·the effectiveness of text messaging reminders in increasing attendance rates for cervical screening appointments

Patient feedback Gather feedback from patients who received text reminders to assess their satisfaction with the screening process. Conduct surveys or interviews to understand patient perceptions and identify areas for improvement.
Staff feedback Gather feedback from staff to assess their experience and satisfaction with the process. Identify any barriers or challenges encountered and solicit suggestions for improvement.
