Improving training, representation and the on call experience for resident doctors at Kent and Medway

Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust have been focused on ensuring they deliver against the 10-point plan to improve the working lives of resident doctors. Delivering against point one of the plan, the trust is committed to improving the on-call experience for resident doctors, implementing practical solutions such as dedicated on-call parking at the front of the building on one trust site and are now working to roll out dedicated on-all parking at their three other sites.

To further improve the workplace wellbeing of resident doctors at each main trust site there is a dedicated resource room which includes areas to relax, desks and chairs for any study and access to kitchens and rest rooms with shower facilities. Further improving the experience for resident doctors when on-call, on-call rooms have been improved to ensure access to kitchens with microwaves, hot water, tea and coffee.

The trust is committed to reducing the repetition of completing mandatory and statutory training, talking to point six of the plan with hybrid working supported by the trust for all staff including resident doctors; for example, resident doctors can complete mandatory training from home during their induction or timetable self-directed learning time with their consultant clinical supervisor.

There is dedicated training space for resident doctors either on site or at the four Kent libraries which all resident doctors have membership to use with the trust fully committed to support resident doctors to have adequate and dedicated study and reflection time.

Delivering against point four of the plan, the trust has a named senior leader responsible for resident doctors’ issues and a resident doctor peer representative who reports to the board, ensuring the resident doctor voice is heard and can influence decisions which impact resident doctors.
