South West Burns Clinical Network

The role of the South West Burns Clinical Network is to deliver a work programme to enhance and standardise the delivery of care for adult and paediatric patients who have suffered a serious burn injury.

The South West Burns Clinical Network is one of four specialised burn networks covering England and Wales.  Each network consists of designated services delivering burn care.

  • Burn Centre: This level of in-patient burn care is for the highest level of injury complexity and offers a separately staffed, geographically discrete ward. The facilities are up to highest level of critical care and have immediate operating theatre access.
  • Burn Unit: This level of in-patient burn care is for the moderate level of injury complexity and offers a separately staffed, discrete ward.
  • Burn Facility: This level of in-patient burn care equates to a standard plastic surgical ward for the care of non-complex burn injuries.

The network’s main objective is to ensure specialised burn services are achieving the comprehensive British Burn Association National Standards for Provision and Outcomes in Adult and Paediatric Burn Care as commissioned by NHS England in their Specialised burn care service specification (adults) and Specialised burn care service specification (children).
