The 2016 survey included 137 NHS trusts. Eligible patients were aged 16 years or over, who had attended a Type 1 or Type 3 service during September 2016. Responses were received from more than 41,000 patients who had attended Type 1 services (a response rate of 28%) and more than 3,500 patients who had attended Type 3 services (a response rate of 25%).

NHS England has also published a Diagnostic Tool, designed to help NHS managers and the general public understand what feeds in to the overall scores and how scores vary across individual NHS organisations.
