Interpretation and action on Protein Creatinine Ratio results in pregnant women

An alert on the risk of harm relating to interpretation and action on Protein Creatinine Ratio (PCR) results in pregnant women.

The alert has been issued to all NHS services involved in ordering, processing, issuing and receiving urinary protein measurements in pregnancy.

Testing for the presence of protein in urine is part of standard care for pregnant women with suspected or confirmed hypertension and pre eclampsia. Ensuring that hypertension and proteinuria are correctly identified and managed is essential to prevent avoidable harm to mother and baby.

Patient safety alerts are shared rapidly with healthcare providers via the Central Alerting System (CAS).
