Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for England, opened her fourth CNO Summit reflecting on the achievements of the previous year and looking forward towards a new vision and strategy.

The CNO Summit is an annual event bringing together senior nursing, midwifery and care leaders from across England to discuss some of the key issues affecting how care is delivered.

Jane Cummings said: “All the achievements I have been proud of this year have taken place through hard work by you and your teams.

“Last year saw a number of changes to the way we work – as nurses and midwives we are constantly changing and adapting, but we know we do this best when we listen and learn from patients and patient leaders. How we work with ‘experts by experience’ can help us realise some of the ambitions in the Five Year Forward View.”

On the development of a new strategy Ms Cummings said: “It’s really important to recognise success but also acknowledge and work with the challenges that face us each day.

“Building on the success of Compassion in Practice, we are working with patients, nurses, midwives and care staff, Arms-Length-Bodies, professional organisations and colleagues in academia to develop a new strategy.

“Our new strategy will set a clear direction for how we as a profession will push the boundaries, how we will create and add significant value to the challenges that NHS is facing in England over the next five years and beyond.”

The Summit is taking place in Birmingham on 1 and 2 December 2015 and is attended by over 500 senior nurses, patient representatives, academics and other Arm’s Length Bodies involved in shaping the future of health and care.
