The future regulation of AI in healthcare
1. The Chair of the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare provided an overview of the work of the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, including its context in wider governance strategies and the 10 year health plan. It was noted that the full report recommendations are due to be reported in September 2026. There was a discussion about the use of Ambient Voice Technologies (AVT), noting that DHSC and NHS England are discussing joint guidance on the use, and potential need for regulation, of AVT.
National Delivery Approach to HealthTech
2. The RIG received an update on the need for a more integrated HealthTech delivery approach. Alongside 10 Year Plan Commitments such as the National HealthTech Access programme, it was reported that 4 topic areas would be prioritised for testing innovative procurement approaches, including AI-enabled dermatology triage, digital health therapeutics for insomnia, robotic assisted surgery, and wearables as an enabler of digital cardiac rehabilitation. The importance of ensuring that HealthTech priority areas are aligned with strategic priorities, Modern Service Frameworks (MSF), commissioning, and procurement approaches was highlighted. The Board supported the agenda and associated actions to accelerate the adoption of HealthTech Innovations which meet NHS needs, and commit to working together to develop the approach. The Board also approved the appointment of a Clinical Champion.
Health Innovation Networks
3. The RIG received a presentation on the work of the Health Innovation Networks.
Technology, innovation and research in the Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Modern Service Framework (MSF)
4. The RIG received an update on the approach to embedding technology, innovation, and research in the CVD MSF, and welcomed the approach taken.
Life Sciences Sector Plan Action 21: Net Zero Supplier Roadmap update
5. The RIG received an update on progress made on Life Sciences Sector Plan Action 21: Continue to refine the implementation of the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap.
