From spreadsheets to speedier care: Sussex saves 90 hours weekly with NHS FDP

An NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP) user story.

Patients are receiving faster access to operations thanks to the NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP) at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The patient booking process for surgery has been revolutionised since going live with the Inpatients Care Coordination Solution (CCS) tool.

“The NHS FDP platform has completely transformed how we manage our waiting lists — we’ve saved over 90 hours staff time each week and massively improved how quickly we can respond to patient needs,” explains Latisia Poffley-Price, who coordinates theatre bookings.

Before NHS FDP, the team used basic spreadsheets and manual processes, making it hard to track patients and book surgeries quickly. Now they have instant access to patient information and can easily see who is ready for surgery.

The system has been successfully rolled out to specialties including maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, ear nose and throat (ENT), and urology. “With the right training and support, transitioning to NHS FDP was smooth — I now use it confidently every day,” Latisia adds.

This improvement has saved around 540 hours each week across 18 staff members and helps patients get their operations sooner.
