1. Introductions

Panel members were welcomed to the meeting by the Chair, who also ran through the agenda. As this was the first meeting for most members, the Chair outlined the structure of meetings and how future meetings would be organised.

No conflicts of interest were raised.

2. Ways of working

The panel discussed the ways of working for the group, covering expectations, how members should contribute to discussions, and escalation routes for any concerns.

Key points raised included:

  • Members should be mindful of others and accountable for their contributions
  • The panel agreed to work flexibly to accommodate personal circumstances
  • Members should be considerate of cultural norms during meetings
  • Members agreed to lead by example in terms of conduct
  • The panel discussed confidentiality expectations; members are expected to abide by Chatham House Rules, and any materials shared whilst in development should be treated as confidential
  • It was agreed that members could submit suggested additions to the ways of working to the secretariat

3. NHS FDP Cancer360 video

The panel reviewed the latest version of a short animation which aimed to introduce the public and healthcare professionals to the NHS FDP Cancer360 product. Feedback focused on accessibility and clarity of the materials.

Key points raised included:

  • Some on-screen movement was distracting, and the pace should be slower
  • Statistics should be clearly explained for a general audience
  • Language should be simplified to remove jargon and be accessible to patients and the public
  • The animation should lead with the benefits and positive outcomes of the programme
  • The script should be tailored to the intended audience and programme objectives

4. NHS FDP patient engagement

The panel received an overview of early plans for public engagement on the FDP, including high-level objectives and desired outcomes.

Key points raised included:

  • The engagement should seek to understand and address concerns
  • Objectives should be clearly defined to inform planning
  • The sample should be representative of the population, including groups who are less likely to engage
  • The engagement should consider health inequalities and how to reach those on the fringes of society
  • Materials should be designed to reduce bias in findings

5. Onboarding update

The panel received a brief update on the onboarding process, confirming that position numbers are in place for all members. The secretariat will communicate with members once all processes for claiming payment are completed.
