Surgical theatres are busier than ever at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust following the adoption of the NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP).
The trust went live with the NHS FDP Inpatient product in March 2025 and has already seen a range of benefits.
The Inpatients Care Coordination Solution (CCS) supports NHS trusts with theatre scheduling, ensuring that clinicians have the data they need to prioritise patients and book slots for surgery.
Since going live within General Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Plastics, and Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) specialties, the trust has seen a range of benefits:
- The percentage of theatre sessions scheduled has increased, showing an average of +10% improvement
- The number of cases scheduled has increased, indicating a +25% change
- Booked utilisation improved by 8.7%, when comparing pre and post implementation
- Through the use of the FDP platform and having real time visibility of scheduling, the Trust has seen a +9% increase in theatre sessions added
The rise in performance across theatre sessions scheduled, and the number of cases scheduled, suggests that the FDP platform is optimising theatre usage, leading to more efficient operations.
Whilst the increase in booked utilisation and the number of theatre sessions added indicates that the platform is enhancing the scheduling process, reducing idle time, and allowing for more procedures to be performed and more patients to be seen.
Staff are actively engaging in the new system and feedback from both management and operational colleagues has been overwhelmingly positive.
Plans are now underway to expand the Inpatient product to support all Surgical specialties who will be trained and onboarded by 8 August 2025.
Gabrielle Harris, Chief Operating Officer at UHCW, said: “The adoption of the NHS FDP, and particularly the Inpatient Care Coordination Solution, has been a game-changer for our Surgical Services team.
We’re already seeing a significant uplift in theatre efficiency, with more sessions scheduled and a notable increase in the number of cases performed.
This isn’t just about numbers, it translates directly into more patients receiving the care they need, sooner. Our staff engagement has been fantastic, a testament to how intuitive and beneficial this system is.
We are incredibly enthusiastic about expanding this tool across all our surgical specialties and rolling out the other NHS FDP products to further enhance patient outcomes and operational excellence across the Trust”
Following the rollout of the Inpatients tool, UHCW plan to adopt the portfolio of NHS FDP core products.
Dan Hayes, director of performance and informatics, national lead for data driven productivity, and UHCW FDP SRO, said:
“The rollout of the Inpatients tool has already demonstrated the positive impact the NHS FDP will have on our ability to improve outcomes for patients and drive operational efficiency.
I am excited to see the impact of all the NHS FDP tools will have for our patients and services as we move ahead with a Trust-wide rollout in the next 12 months”
Inpatient CCS is currently deployed at 34 NHS trusts as part of the NHS FDP rollout. Updates on uptake of the NHS FDP, available products and reported benefits are published quarterly on the NHS England website: NHS England » NHS Federated Data Platform uptake and benefits.
