NHS oversight framework csv metadata file

Data found in the NHS oversight framework dashboards are also made available in comma-separated variables (csv) files to allow users to carry out their own analyses.

The data definitions table below supports the following csv data files:

Trust_typeThe specific area of healthcare services the trust is responsible for providing.  String
Trust_subtypeFurther classification of the trust type, for example identifying if the trust is a specialist trust.String
Trust_codeThe NHS Organisation Data Service trust code.String
Trust_nameThe name of the trust.String
DomainThe name of the domain the metric is assigned to.String
Sub-domainThe name of the sub-domain the metric is assigned to.String
Metric_IDThe identification number for the metric.String
Metric_descriptionThe metric name – further information on each metric, including links to their published source can be found in the metric metadata tab of the dashboards.String
Reporting_dateThe reporting date for the data in the dashboard.String
UnitsThe units in which the metric is measured (for example count, percentage, rate).String
ValueThe reported trust value for the metric.Numeric
Median_valueThe mid-point value for the metric when values are sorted from smallest to largest (this is the same as the second quartile).  Note that the median is calculated separately for each trust type.Numeric
Lower_quartileThe value below which the lowest 25% of the data for that metric lies. Note that the lower quartile is calculated separately for each trust type.Numeric
Upper_quartileThe value above which the highest 25% of the data for that metric lies. Note that the upper quartile is calculated separately for each trust type.Numeric
RankThe position of the trust when the metric values are ordered from best to worst.  There are separate rankings for each trust type and only for metrics where it is logical to rank performance (for example metrics relating to CQC scores are not ranked as these already rank trusts by performance).Numeric

Likely_range_of_average_scoreThe range an organisation’s average metric score could fall in, with 95% certainty, depending on the combination of metrics included within the framework. Please refer to the ‘More information’ button on the Statistics table of the dashboards for further information on how this has been calculated.String
SegmentThe trust’s oversight framework adjusted segment (metric ID OF5000 in the trust data csv file).  This is the quartiled segment for the trust following consideration of its financial position (any trust in financial deficit or in receipt of deficit support can be no higher than a segment 3).Numeric
Trust_in_financial_deficitA Yes/No flag to indicate if the trust is in financial deficit or in receipt of deficit support (when a trust is flagged as Yes, their segment can be no higher than 3).String
RankThe rank for a trust is based on the segment adjusted for the financial deficit and the average metric score.  Trusts in segment 1 will have the highest ranks, followed by trusts in segment 2 and so on. Whether or not a trust is in the Recovery Support Programme does not affect its rank. There are separate rankings for each trust type.Numeric
