Local maternity system

Who are we?

  • We are a group of people who are involved with either providing, receiving or commissioning maternity care.
  • The work of the local maternity system (LMS) is overseen by the Maternity Transformation Board, which includes doctors, midwives, Maternity Voices Partnership, Neonatal Network, Health Visitors, commissioners, public health workers and other people who drive improvements in this area.
  • Work is delivered alongside providers by partners from the Strategic Clinical Network (SCN), Patient Safety Collaborative (PSC) and North West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (NWNODN).
  • The area we cover is all maternity providers within Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire.

What are our aims?

  • Developing a strong, cohesive maternity system.
  • Bring together providers involved within maternity and neonatal care ensuring the services are person-centred, safe and of a high quality for mothers and babies through pregnancy, birth and postnatal period .
  • Reducing variation in maternity services across Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire .

How do we do it?

  • Making sure service users, clinicians, key stakeholders and families have a voice in designing and developing services allows our steering group to identify where improvements can be made.
  • Support the implementation of National Maternity Review, Better Births.
  • Lead and/or facilitate working groups to meet objectives within GM&EC Implementation plan to achieve Better Birth recommendations. These areas are:
    • Safety
    • Choice and personalisation
    • Continuity of carer
    • Postnatal care
    • Perinatal mental health
    • Neonatal care
    • Contracting and pricing
  • Manage the introduction of the improvements and then evaluate their impact.

Equity and Equality Action Plan

  • We are working with women, people and their families and others to develop an equity and equality action plan. It will address the poorer outcomes for women, people and their babies from Black, Asian and Mixed Ethnic backgrounds and those living in deprived areas.

How can I get involved?

  • The maternity Transformation Board meets quarterly and a newsletter is distributed following this meeting with updates from the group and progress on work within the plan. View the latest newsletter.
