Case study – Community Equipment Service

Organisation: Cheshire and Merseyside ICB / Rosscare

What was the issue? Previously equipment was not reused or recycled and patients were told to dispose of it after use. They were frustrated that no attempt was made to reuse it and often found it difficult to dispose of.

What action was taken? Following public consultation, it was clear that the preferred community equipment model was a recycling service. In 2016 West Cheshire CCG and CWaC procured a recycling equipment service. In 2021, the recycling model was rolled out further when Cheshire East Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire CCG partnered up and procured the recycling equipment service, county wide.

What was the Delivering a Net Zero NHS benefit?  We are currently recycling around 2000 pieces of equipment monthly and saving approx £200,000 a month

What are the wider benefits?

  • Less equipment in landfill
  • Reduction in carbon footprint
  • Reduction in supply chain issues
  • Quality of service, patients have the equipment collected
  • Patient satisfaction
  • Financial savings
