Case study – Switching to Reusable Theatre Caps
Organisation: Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) and Warwick Med
What was the issue?
On average, 20 theatre departments utilise 100,000 disposable theatre caps per year, producing significant waste and environmental impact. LUHFT anticipate a saving of approximately 1 tonne of clinical waste per year on caps alone. The basic constituent of the caps- viscose- is derived from wood, depleting natural forests. Its manufacturing process uses harsh chemicals that are associated with chronic skin and heart conditions linked to cancer. Wearing the caps makes staff less identifiable which can lead to miscommunication the cause of 70% of adverse events in healthcare. It also increases patient anxiety when they are not sure who is who, which can ultimately lead to an increase in blood pressure and a longer stay.
What action was taken?
Warwick Med has designed an improved reusable cloth theatre cap to target these issues. Adding names, roles and colour coding to personalise caps.
What was the Delivering a Net Zero NHS benefit?
An average saving over a 3-year period on theatre cap spending is projected to be around £50,000. (Annual cost of disposable caps= £25,000 per year and average 3-year spend on reusables= £21,000).
Reduced waste by switching to reusable less carbon intensive caps.
What are the wider benefits?
Better communication and teamwork which has led to improved patient safety and experience as patient anxiety is reduced. Staff feel a sense of identity.
