Case study – Net Zero Primary Care Lead

Organisation: NHS Cheshire and Merseyside

What was the issue?

The links with primary care colleagues could be stronger from a sustainability perspective to facilitate delivery on sustainability actions and initiatives.

What action was taken?

A Net Zero Primary Care Lead was appointed. Fact finding and baselining was then carried out to determine sustainability activity across primary care within the Cheshire and Merseyside region. An event for primary care colleagues was held in September 2022 to provide guidance to follow and introduce initiatives for them to adopt.

What was the Delivering a Net Zero NHS benefit?

Fitting into the Workplace, networks and system leadership workstream, this project has begun to create a network of primary care colleagues, providing opportunities to share ideas and to innovate. Through these discussions, ideas have been generated, with one of these to hold a specific event focussed on primary care held in September to provide information, networking opportunities and initiatives to adopt to be more sustainable.

What are the wider benefits?

Following the appointment of a Net Zero Primary Care Lead, discussions have led to further ideas such as a local event to provide more information and networking opportunities. It will ideally lead to more events of a similar structure to engage primary care colleagues, share knowledge and best practices as well as accelerate primary care sustainability networks.
