The NHS Community Pharmacy Hypertension Case finding service was launched in October 2021 to support risk identification and prevention of CVD. It enables pharmacies to use both clinic blood pressure checks and ambulatory blood pressure checks on eligible individuals in community pharmacy, with the objective of identifying risk of undiagnosed hypertension.

This service specification outlines key changes to the service including:

  • clarification that patients are able to access the service once every five years
  • updates to the eligibility criteria regarding which patients may be referred into the service by general practice teams
  • emphasis on the average wake-time ABPM reading as the key measure to share with general practitioners, as this supports the diagnostic process
  • inclusion of additional guidance relating to off-site arrangements
