Mulligan et al (2018) is a multi-disciplinary study demonstrating nursing leadership in research. It focused on links between Serious Mental Illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and the prevalence and outcomes of type 2 diabetes.

Their study used multi-methods to investigate and identify barriers or enablers of diabetes self-management experienced by people with SMI. They concluded that there is a need to improve diabetes self-management support for this population.
