This is issued as general guidance under section 14Z51 of the NHS Act 2006 to reduce unwarranted variation, improve patient outcomes and provide value for money for the NHS. It provides recommendations for items that are available over the counter  and should not be routinely prescribed in primary care.

This guidance is for prescribing healthcare professionals, integrated care boards and organisations that commission services.
