Obesity surgery (also known as metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) is recommended to be
available as a routine commissioning treatment option for a small number of highly
selected young people with severe and complex obesity within the criteria set out in this
document.

The policy is restricted to certain age groups as this reflects the population for whom NHS
England is the responsible commissioner
