Our work

We have made good progress in improving cancer outcomes since we established, first as a cancer clinical network in 2015 and more recently as a Cancer Alliance. Cancer patients in Wessex now have the best long-term (10 year) survival rates in England and Wessex Cancer Alliance ranks fourth out of 19 Cancer Alliances for one-year survival rates.

Our Achievement of Ambitions publication details our work so far, improvements made and how Wessex Cancer Alliance is performing against national standards.

Work remains ongoing. Detecting cancers earlier and faster is the single biggest thing we can do to improve survival rates. To ensure we sustain and accelerate survival rates we need to make progress in three key areas:

  • Diagnose more cancers early
  • Identify and reduce variation in access and outcomes for patients
  • Ensure we put innovation and research into practice faster.
