Required skills, experience and attributes are described in the NHS Leadership Competency Framework for Board Members

Desirable experience:

  • Prior experience as a Non-executive director (any sector)
  • Prior experience on an NHS board (executive, non-executive or associate role)
  • Professional qualification or equivalent experience
  • Prior senior experience of complex organisations outside the NHS, i.e. private, voluntary or other public sector providers of similar scale
  • A deep understanding and experience of the type of challenges which currently present within the Kent and Medway Integrated Care System;
  • Experience of working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, including statutory, voluntary, and community sector partners
  • Evidence of successfully supporting organisations through periods of challenge (financial sustainability, partnership working), whilst still achieving positive outcomes for local communities
  • Experience of managing with impartiality, integrity, assertiveness and tactfulness and be able to evidence their advocacy of constructive challenge
  • The ability to manage a group of non-executive directors with a view to continuously improve and sustain an effective relationship with the full Board of Directors and the Council of Governors
  • Evidence of setting direction, providing a vision for strategic improvement and modernisation which is both challenging and attainable
  • A leadership style that facilitates the effective contribution of all Board members and makes a positive difference in motivating, empowering and supporting individuals especially when faced with ambiguity and uncertainty in the pressurised and rapidly changing environment of the health service

As a future NHS leader, the successful candidates will be able to demonstrate that they meet the NHS leadership competency framework for board members (please see the candidate information pack below for the six domains). The competency domains are aligned to Our NHS People PromiseOur Leadership Way and the Seven Principles of Public Life (Nolan Principles).
