Frequently asked questions
Common queries about the National Major Trauma Registry and data collection.
It will not be possible to submit any data via the Trauma Audit and Research Network database. The Trauma Audit and Research Network and the Trauma Audit and Research Network service ceased in June 2023. The National Major Trauma Registry was established in April 2024 by NHS England.
The National Major Trauma Registry fulfils the same purpose as the Trauma Audit and Research Network database, but has been developed over a transition period to provide an enhanced service offering of improved collection functionality, data linkage and reporting.
The University of Manchester switched off the Trauma Audit and Research Network platform and allied resources, such as the Trauma Audit and Research Network website, in June 2023. This also meant that further system procurements by external companies, including future exploratory work, ceased.
The National Major Trauma Registry is a completely new solution, with the National Major Trauma Registry service being delivered within the NHS England Outcomes and Registries Programme.
Training was available prior to the launch of the National Major Trauma Registry and continues to be provided by the National Major Trauma Registry service team. The team can be contacted via england.support.NMTR@nhs.net.
The National Major Trauma Registry is hosted on a platform that collects data from other registries via bulk upload. It may be possible to develop a future bulk upload facility to the National Major Trauma Registry, dependent on coverage and formatting of required data in local systems.
A revised reporting schedule will be agreed with the Major Trauma Clinical Reference Group (MT CRG) and communicated by NHS England.
Historic Trauma Audit and Research Network data was migrated to the National Major Trauma Registry in March 2024.
Submissions generated in the previous Trauma Audit and Research Network electronic data collection and reporting (eDCR) system were saved on the University of Manchester’s server (including cases created, dispatched, re-dispatched, returned for review, or rejected). Therefore they should not be re-entered into the new National Major Trauma Registry data entry system. This is to ensure that there is no duplication of submission once the migration of historic data is complete.
New fields have been added to the minimal viable dataset, which were agreed as clinically relevant by the previous Trauma Audit and Research Network Audit Committee (the committee that formed part of Trauma Audit and Research Network’s project governance process). These additional fields are:
- height
- weight
- BMI
- ethnicity
- CPR
- temperature
- patient involvement in a clinical trial
Also in the National Major Trauma Registry, observations and interventions will be recordable for ward stays.
