This document sets out for NHS managers of chaplaincy services in England guidance on how to run and manage a safe, effective and inclusive chaplaincy service, with some examples of how NHS bodies across the country are operating such services.

Ben Atkins was recently the Clinical Director at Revive Dental Care, which had four practices across Manchester. Before he moved on to his next role, he outlined their journey implementing changes to recalls for NHS patients following the NICE clinical guidelines relating to interval periods for dental checks.

Jennifer Owen, Chair of the Gateshead and South Tyneside Local Dental Committee and Practice Principal at Park View Family Dental, Gateshead, outlines her practice’s use of a personalised recall approach as recommended in NICE guidance. The practice is recalling NHS patients based on their oral health needs, freeing up more appointments for those with high needs and ensuring the most effective balance between routine, urgent and emergency care.

This addendum to NHS England’s Your statutory duties – A reference guide for NHS foundation trust governors (the guide for governors), originally published by Monitor, explains how the duties of NHS foundation trust councils of governors support system working and collaboration, and provides examples of good practice. It supplements (rather than replaces) the guide for governors, and the two documents should be used in conjunction.

A practical guide for hospital tobacco dependence teams (TDTs) and hospital pharmacy teams on how to refer patients at discharge into the community pharmacy NHS Smoking Cessation Service (SCS). The guide should be read in conjunction with the community pharmacy advanced service specification.

This guidance is designed to help senior leaders, in NHS organisations who provide services to the NHS, develop a culture where:

• leaders and managers encourage workers to speak up
• where matters raised by workers drive learning and improvement.
