Assessing your level of compliance

The 2016 version of the accessible information standard required organisations to be fully compliant with all aspects of it. Organisations should be in a position to annually publish their compliance with the 2025 version by March 2027.

You can measure your organisation’s compliance against a set of performance measures by using the self-assessment framework.

The self-assessment framework

The framework helps organisations to assess their compliance with the  accessible information standard and develop local action plans to address areas for improvement.

Using the self-assessment framework

The framework is designed to make use of readily available data and follows the 6 steps to implement the accessible information standard.

The assessment statements require organisations to evidence how they are meeting each step. When viewed together, each question follows a hypothetical patient journey.

By using this framework and publishing the findings, you can compare performance in a consistent way, allowing like-for-like comparison between organisations and systems

8 steps to completing the framework

  • Step 1: Understand the accessible information standard
  • Step 2: Assemble a self-assessment team
  • Step 3: Review current practices
  • Step 4: Conduct staff and user surveys
  • Step 5: Undertake gap analysis
  • Step 6: Develop an action plan
  • Step 7: Implement the plan and monitor
  • Step 8: Deliver continuous improvement

Although using the self-assessment framework isn’t mandatory, we would encourage the use of this practical tool to help demonstrate compliance with the standard.

Implementation will be tested with a number of integrated care boards and systems following publication of the first self-assessment responses, which should be completed by the end of March 2027.
