The Model Health System

The Model Health System helps NHS organisations use data to compare quality, productivity and performance, so they can identify opportunities for improvement. It supports NHS leaders, managers and clinicians to explore data, compare with peers and focus on where improvement is needed most.

How it works

There are two versions of the Model Health System:

  • the NHS Model Health System, which requires an NHS login
  • the Open Model Health System, which is available without a login and provides access to selected benchmarking data.

NHS Model Health System

Anyone working in the NHS can use the NHS Model Health System to explore and compare productivity, quality and responsiveness data, helping them identify opportunities to improve services.

The NHS Model Health System includes data for acute, ambulance, mental health and community NHS trusts, as well as system-level data for Integrated Care Systems (ICSs). Users can compare their organisation with similar providers to understand variation in performance and identify where improvement may be needed.

Access the NHS Model Health System

All NHS staff can access the Model Health System. Staff in NHS trusts and commissioning organisations can view and download data for their own organisation, alongside comparisons with other trusts, national averages and peer groups. Users can also switch to view any other provider and aggregated system-level data.

Staff from NHS arm’s-length bodies, the Department of Health and Social Care, and its agencies can also access the tool. In exceptional circumstances, time-limited access may be granted to other users with the agreement of a provider or NHS England.

Open Model Health System

The NHS is committed to becoming the most transparent healthcare system in the world. To support this ambition, we have made an open version of the Model Health System available.

The Open Model Health System is available without a login and provides access to benchmarking data across a wide range of clinical, operational and productivity areas. It is open to anyone, whether inside or outside the NHS, and provides access to aggregated data to support transparency, comparison and partnership working.

The Open Model Health System includes aggregated, non-identifiable data across more than 20 specialties and domains, including orthopaedics, general surgery, general medicine, outpatients, and workforce areas such as equality, diversity and inclusion.
