Shaping the future
The Chief Nursing Officer for England previews her annual summit which will bring together more than 500 nursing leaders, academics and patient representatives:
It’s almost five years since I became the Chief Nursing Officer for England and my fifth CNO summit is just around the corner.
The health and care system has faced more challenges than ever in the past few years and each year the Summit brings the senior nursing, midwifery and care leadership community together to explore how our professions can develop the solutions to manage current issues and the future design of the health and care system.
The theme of my Summit this year will build on the consensus reached last year around what is now ‘Leading Change, Adding Value: a framework for nursing, midwifery and care staff’ and focus on how we continue to place nursing, midwifery and care staff as leaders of change.
The Summit will be attended by up to 500 senior nurses, midwives, patient representatives, academics and national and international leaders involved in shaping the future of health and care.
Based on the 10 commitments in Leading Change, Adding Value, the summit will be based on four themes that centre around innovation and improvement, leadership excellence, culture, personalisation and experience.
Summit delegates will explore these themes in more detail but, of course, sharing your thoughts about the role of nursing, midwifery and care staff in designing the future health and care system is open to everyone, not just those attending the Summit. With this in mind, I ask you all to get involved, no matter what role you have; follow discussion on twitter, using the hash tag #cnosummit and visit our new web pages.
I’m pleased to announce that a number of national and international leaders will be speaking at my Summit, providing wide ranging insight into the issues we face across the health and care system, stimulating debate to explore how we can work together to maximise our leadership to influence the design of patient focused services.
Some of these speakers include:
- Simon Stevens – Chief Executive, NHS England
- Jim Mackey – Chief Executive, NHS Improvement
- Jon Rouse – Chief Officer, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership
- Maureen Bisognano – President Emerita and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement
- Sharon Blackburn – Policy and Communications Director, National Care Forum
Over the coming weeks and months a number of speakers from different organisations will be posting blogs, providing insight into what they will be talking about, as well as demonstrating the importance of nursing, midwifery and care staff to deliver positive outcomes for patients. Keep an eye out for blogs as they are posted.
I am looking forward to what we can achieve together. I can honestly say I am proud to lead such a diverse and committed workforce and privileged to lead such a well-respected and trusted profession – a recent Ipsos Mori poll confirmed that 93 per cent of those surveyed trusted nurses, a fantastic achievement and well done.
Thank you all for your support and all you do.
