Information for integrated care boards

The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) will help integrated care boards (ICBs) (on behalf of the integrated care systems (ICSs)) to proactively plan services that meet the needs of their local population.

Systems need access to high-quality data and tooling that increases collaboration and optimises coordination of care, with the flexibility to make decisions about how partners work together for the benefit of the local population.

The NHS FDP provides systems with the capability to develop their own digital tools that create agility and real time intelligence.

The NHS FDP is the enabler to connect data in a secure environment and address the most pressing operational challenges whilst enhancing the ability to make informed and effective decisions.

Examples of possible use include:

  • linking data to understand the factors which are driving poor outcomes in different population groups; for example, how many people could be affected by an illness like diabetes or asthma
  • taking preventative action – what help might support those people before any illness develop

“We are using the NHS FDP for three strategic use cases – care coordination, population health and supply chain. There is so much scope for us to be able to connect data and this platform is the enabler.

“It provides the bridge between national data and the data that the trusts have – where previously ICBs felt isolated from the national data, but this bridges that gap and enables us to get a good overview.” – Sue Harriman, CEO, NHS Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICB
