Hospital redevelopment transforms patient flow
A purpose-built urgent treatment centre at the front of Barnet Hospital is the most visible sign of a major transformation since November 2024.
The centre includes a waiting area, 2 GP consultation rooms and 3 emergency nurse practitioner rooms. Walk-in patients are triaged and transferred to the emergency department if necessary.
Ambulance handover and triage areas have also been redesigned and doubled in size. Improvements include a dedicated ambulance entrance and reception point, twice the number of trolley spaces, a new ‘fit-to-sit’ area for mobile patients, a central reception desk, a nursing station and a family room. 2 dedicated mental health bays provide a calm environment for patients in crisis.
The final phase of the transformation has delivered a significantly upgraded paediatric emergency department for children and young people. The new space has a separate entrance, a 24/7 reception and 50% more clinical capacity, with an additional triage room and more than double the number of waiting area seats. There’s a place of safety room for young people in mental health crisis, a sensory room, and an amenities area for parents and carers.
These improvements support a new model of care. Patients can be seen more quickly, unnecessary admissions are reduced and more people can be safely monitored at home.
